Flashback: Muir breaks British 1500m record at Müller Anniversary Games

Britain’s Laura Muir produced one of the performances of her career to date as she broke Kelly Holmes’ long standing British record for the 1500m at the Müller Anniversary Games.

Performing in front of an expectant crowd at the London Stadium later in the day, Muir was first paraded around the track alongside international stars Usain Bolt and Kim Collins before the start of proceedings.

The Scottish athlete, who trains with Dundee’s Hawkhill athletics club, has rose to prominence over the last two years after a string of impressive performances and has established herself as one Britain’s rising athletics stars and one of the world’s elite in the 1500m.

Twenty three year old Muir has experienced a successful start to the 2016 season, breaking Yvonne Murray’s Scottish record for the mile in 4:19:12 at the Oslo Diamond League meeting before winning the British Championships in Birmingham.

Muir, who juggles her time as a professional athlete with her studies as a veterinary surgeon at the University of Glasgow, chose the perfect time to showcase her medal potential ahead of the Rio Olympic Games.

Lining up against a world class field, Muir seemed intent on running a fast race from the off and settled in at the front of the pack for the first few laps.

Out to prove her worth she continued the rapid pace and opened up a gap on the last lap, stretching clear of Dutch athlete Sifan Hassan. Looking strong on the final straight Muir gave it everything in the last few metres as she clocked a new British record of 3.57.49.

Clearly delighted with her performance, Muir stated after the race: “Breaking the British record blows my mind a bit. I haven’t run a fast 1500m this year so I wanted to go out there and show the world what I can do – I think the performance shows what I’m capable of. My last race wasn’t a great one, but you can’t get much better than tonight.”
