FLASHBACK: Kendra Harrison breaks 100m hurdles world record
At the 2016 Muller Anniversary Games, Kendra Harrison broke the 28-year 100m hurdles world record as she clocked 12.20 on her way to victory.
Having missed out on the chance to be at the 2016 Olympic Games, the American produced a faultless performance at the London Stadium to break Bulgarian Yordanka Donkova’s 12.21 record, set in 1988.
Harrison found herself nearly a hurdle ahead of the rest of the field at the 60m point and crossed the line in an unofficial time of 12.58 after dipping so low underneath the trackside beam.
This was corrected a few moments later to 12.20 and a sense of disappointment turned to disbelief as the London Stadium erupted.
The feeling of becoming the new world record holder had not sunk in for the then 23-year-old, especially not when her time was corrected.
She said: “To hear people call me a world record holder, it sounds remarkable. I wanted to come out here and show the world that I still have it even though I won’t be going to the Olympics. I had to give it all I had.
“Initially I saw 12.5 and I was just happy to come out here and win. I was so happy when it came up and I was feeling really blessed. It shows that even if you don’t go out there and make the team, you have to keep going and be strong. I just ran my best and look what happened.”
