Eight world-class athletes added to stacked men’s 100m field.

  • Average personal best of the field stands at a rapid 9.92
  • 7 different nationalities present
  • Eight new additions hold 25 major medals between them

Now containing nine athletes with a mix of seven different nationalities on display, the men’s 100m at this summer’s Muller Anniversary Games has very much confirmed itself as one of the must-watch events within this summer’s series.

Heading up the additions is China’s athletics poster-boy, Bingtian SU. A 9.99 man over 100m, SU twice smashed the Asian record over 60m this indoor season with a scorching 6.43 before going on to clinch world indoor silver behind Coleman in Birmingham.

The bronze medallist in the same race, the USA’s Ronnie Baker, is set to join the pair in London, with the race serving to reunite the trio who made the podium earlier this year. Baker holds a best of 9.97 seconds and has established himself as one of many fine USA sprinters over the previous two years. 

Known for getting behind their own, the home-crowd will have plenty to cheer on in the form of CJ Ujah and Reece Prescod.

Ujah is the reigning IAAF Diamond League champion following a superb series last year which culmintated in victory in Zurich, while he is sure to relish returning the stadium in which he played a starring role as Britain took a memorable world 4x100m gold last August. 

Sure to have put himself on the radar of both athletics aficionados as well as casual fans, fellow Londoner Prescod is already building on a fine 2017 in which he became national champion and progressed to the final of the world championships over 100m. The 22-year-old claimed an eye-catching win at Shanghai’s IAAF Diamond League meeting in damp conditions, a performance which has catapulted him into the public eye more-so. 

The 1-2-3 from April’s Commonwealth Games 100m final will all be present in London too, each of whom are sub-10 second runners and have racked up a impressive haul of achievements between them.

Akani Simbine put together a scorching back end of is race to streak clear for Commonwealth Gold in 10.03, with a South African 1-2 securing by Henricho Bruintjies, with both athletes playing a part in the South African 4x100m silver that followed just days later.  

Completing the Commonwealth Games podium reunion is Yohan Blake (JAM), and while the second quickest man in history was undoubtedly disappointed with being edged into bronze on the Gold Coast, the 9.69 man and double Olympic champion is not to be discounted when it comes to mixing it with the best. 

Completing the additions for the time being is an athlete who is something of a fan-favourite over in the UK, with 2003 world champion Kim Collins’ presence in London looking certain to be his final outing in the UK before he hangs up his spikes.

The 9.93 man has competed in the UK over 50 times and is sure for a fine send-off from the London crowd.
